Columbia, SC
Overview
U.S. Silica's Columbia plant is located in the "Sandhills" of the Carolinas. These "Sandhills" consist of high-grade silica that is perfect for filtration, frac and geothermal grout.
History
The Columbia plant commenced operation in 1962. At that time, the raw materials were mined by Columbia Aggregates, LLC, and delivered to the Columbia plant by rail cars for processing. In the half century that the plant has been in operation, the business has grown exponentially, with frequent modernizations of the facility and equipment.
In 1997, the Columbia plant was the very first silica operation in North America to become ISO 9002 certified. Today the Columbia plant produces approximately 350,000 tons of high-quality silica product per year.
Community
The Columbia plant is committed to preserving the environment it operates in and has been awarded the National Association of State Land Reclamationists (NASLR) National Mined Land Reclamation Award.
Additionally, the Columbia employees participate in a variety of outreach programs within their community, working in local school programs and with a number of nonprofit organizations.
