Hurtsboro, AL
Overview
U.S. Silica's Hurtsboro plant processes whole grain sand from numerous deposits formed by the Blufftown Formation to the north and Cusseta Formation to the south. The silica processed in Hurtsboro is used primarily by nearby foundry companies and roofing manufacturers.
History
Sand mining has been a part of the Hurtsboro landscape for well over 50 years. During the 1950s, a gentleman named Paul Wills built the Hurtsboro Plant under the operating name of Tri-State Sand Company, which changed hands many times over the passing years, until it was purchased by U.S. Silica in 1987.
The plant is dedicated to the families of its employees and to the community in which it operates, and works diligently to provide a safe and healthy workplace. Among other things, these values are demonstrated by the facility’s ISO certification and 20-year safety record.
Community
The Hurtsboro employees strive to be exemplary members of their community and to preserve the environment in which they operate. This is accomplished through the extensive reclamation process utilized by the Hurtsboro plant, one that is in place before mining even begins.
