Aplite is added to container glass and insulation fiberglass batches for the alumina content. Alumina (Al203) is a minor but important ingredient in glass composition. It inhibits devitrification, affects the viscosity during glass forming, and improves the chemical durability and thermal shock resistance of the finished glass.
Aplite's melting point, which is lower than that of silica, enables the material to disperse more easily at the furnace temperatures used in glassmaking. With proper sizing, Aplite is also less likely to form defects in the glass.
